Junior Engineer No. 100 steam engine in original box with instructions (1950)

Excellent example of the Junior Engineer No. 100 steam engine, made in Chicago in 1950. Retains the original gray paint on the base. The Junior Engineer red decal is perfect. Engine shows very little evidence of use.

(1) This engine was introduced in 1950. See last picture (Popular Mechanics ad, November 1950). (2) The engine could be built in three different configurations: No. On the back of the instruction sheets are exploded-view blueprints. (3) The engine is built as the No.

Based on the excellent condition of the gray paint on the base, it doesn't look like it was ever reconfigured as the No. 2 horizontal or the No. (4) The engine was recently oiled. It turns over freely and runs perfectly on air.

So little pressure is needed that the engine will operate just by blowing into the cylinder. (5) The original box is all there and in amazing shape. It even includes the 2 box inserts.

(6) The funnel is perfect. (7) The electrical cord is dried up and cracked. If the engine is to be steamed (I owned the engine for years and never ran it on steam), the cord should be replaced. (8) The original steam line from the boiler to the cylinder was cracked and useless. I replaced it with the new rubber hose shown in the pictures.

(9) The additional cast and brass parts to make the other engine configurations are all there, except for the offset link for the No. The offset link is pointed out with a screwdriver on the photo of the blueprint for the No. This link was somehow lost over the years. I never sought to find a replacement because I believe the No. 1 beam engine makes a more interesting display piece, and I didn't want to damage the gray paint on the base by reconfiguring the engine.
