RARE ANTIQUE GERMAN ERNST PLANK 1899 VERTICAL TOY STEAM ENGINE IN TOP CONDITION

RARE ANTIQUE GERMAN ERNST PLANK 1899 VERTICAL TOY STEAM ENGINE IN TOP CONDITION. The Ernst Plank KG was a Nuremberg/Germany factory for metal toys. Ernst Plank founded the company in 1866 and began with the manufacture of working steam engine models as well as laterna magica.

Fact is that Plank was one of the first if not the first company producing working models of steam engines. In 1882 Ernst Plank started the production of clockwork powered locomotives followed as historically the first company to also produce steam powered toy locomotives and toy ships. The source of heat was provided by a small methylated spirit tank with burner. The great depression of the 20s ment the beginning of the end for the company and by 1930 there financial situation was desperate.

They also changed the company description from Metal Toy Manufacturers to Optical Precision Instruments Manufacturers. The company survived WWII and continued manufacturing film projectors until video cameras came on the marked. 1985 all production ceased and 1996 the company filed for bankruptcy and shut its doors for ever.

How can I best describe this magnificent piece of Victorian technology unparalleled by more modern toy steam engines? Let me put it like this: It has not been touched in decades as neither I nor my dad were ever allowed to play with it! The overall condition can only be described as a serious collectors dream, a once in a lifetime chance to obtain a very early Ernst Plank Steam Engine in top condition with beautiful patina! I did NOT touch it, leave alone try to polish the patina off! It is up to the expert the collector to decided how he or she wants to proceed with the engine.

All I did was dust it. 11 tall, the boiler has a height of 4 ¼ and a diameter of 2 ½. It is nearly complete and comes with a pressure gauge (manometer) which doubles as a safety valve. The manometer scale is imprinted with D.

And a scale from 0-4. Stands for Deutsches Reichspatent and the German Reichs Patent Number 111931 was issued to Ernst Plank KG on July 7. 1899 for exactly this pressure gauge and relieve valve combination. The upright engine powers a heavy 3 ½ fly wheel via a single piston cylinder.

In operation the flywheel can change rotation direction by simply stopping it with your hand and pushing it in the opposite direction for restart. The engine has its original oval Makers Plaque E. With the winged flywheel attached to its lower half.

There are so many working features on this engine: Next to the flywheel is a water level indicator glass pipe, protected by a metal shield. Needless to say that it is undamaged.

The piston mechanic is in top condition and is working smoothly, transmitting the strokes via joints to the flywheel axle. At the bottom of the water tank is the original drainage spout. The handle of the spout has still has its original black cover!

Many a times the original fuel tank got lost but not in this case: It is still there where it belongs to! It seems to me that the number of attachments I checked still retain their original caskets.

None of them I saw were either dried up or crumbled. OK is there anything missing or needs replacing? I believe that the smoke stack (decorative chimney) is missing. Also the little switch/spout/handle to turn the steam whistle on and of is not there.

And the little arm with a small weight regulating the pressure isnt there either. I dont know their correct names so please forgive me. Recreating those missing parts dont seem difficult to me at all.

No I did not test the engine as I do not have the experience or knowledge. I also did not want to damage something by mistake which is possibly 117 years old and very rare. Please contact me for additional pictures or any question you have! This is really a super rare museum quality toy steam engine from one of the most famous manufacturers!
