Weeden No. 1 Steam Engine Toy
Base 4 1/8 inch diameter. The original upright engine designed at the request of Youth Companion magazine and offered as a premium for subscription or outright sale.
This Engine is fitted with a throttle valve, throttle whistle and lever weight pressure valve. The oscillating cylinder exhausts through the smoke stack.
The original cut was used in advertisements through 1889. Later models without swing door had wide slot separators on the crown.
Early description listed boilers as painted red firebox, and stack as painted black, top of boiler and base painted gold. Other engines were nickel plated boiler, firebox and base. Variations included nickel boiler, black firebox and red base. Another variation has a brass boiler, steel firebox painted black, steel base painted red. Overall height will vary due to stack height. Flywheel diameter vary over the years of production.On some models the boiler cap is inscribed in raised letters WEEDENS UPRIGHT ENGINE No. An engine of all brass construction was listed as Weeden No. A late 1880s ad in Ladies Home Journal states, There are 40 pieces and over 400 operations in the manufacture of this engine. Packed in a locked-corner wooden box. This engine is very common in average or lesser condition and less common in excellent and near-mint condition.
Due to tin boilers, many engines may have pin holes in the lower boiler area. Description is from Kenneth Trobaughs Weeden steam engine toy book, Weeden, The Company And Its Products. I have not tested this unit. Appears to be missing whistle. This model does not have the swing door. The one wick burner unit is intact (see pictures).Appears to be the nickel model but finish is no longer intact with some corrosion. Will allow new owner to clean it to their personal specifications.
