This is a very interesting 1880s gas fired steam engine that I acquired recently and, although there is no maker's signature, I believe it is of English or French origin, possibly from such makers as Stevens Model Dockyard, Mauraisin, or Radiguet & Massiot. The entire engine, with its integrated boiler, is designed to sit loosely inside its own external faux boiler/furnace that houses the gas burner underneath. A door at the base of this furnace allows you to light the burner, the other door is to regulate the gas flow. The nozzle on the side is the external connection to a gas source. The beautifully ornate oscillating engine and flywheel are mostly of brass construction. The large handle appears to be for regulating the steam flow, while the thin post with the machine screw is probably some simple form of a safety valve. One of the three steel screws from the cylinder's back cover is missing, but this should not affect it's proper function at all. Although there exists a painstaking way of filling up the boiler, the more simple, intended method (which I have never before encountered on these types of engines) is to unscrew the boiler from beneath the circular engine platform. The only hint of this were the several heavy scratch marks along the brass boiler, as well as a bit of screw thread still visible there the two parts join up. Just using my bare hands, I was not able to unscrew the boiler, but people with live steam modeling experience may have much better approach. Because of the above (and because I have no source of natural gas) I have not fired up the engine. The black painted tin boiler/furnace base, with riveted brass bands, measures 6.5 x 6.5, with a height of 13 inches to the top of the stack. Radiguet, stevens model dockyard, stationary steam, victorian, antique, hot air motor, dampf, dampfmaschine, ernst plank, machine a vapeur, jouet, bing, schoenner, locomotive, carette, marklin.
