Up for sale is a fantastic antique steam engine that has been recently discovered and is being auctioned for the first time. This is a Breval type vertical steam engine with a very unusual Gothic-like eccentric rod made by Radiguet, Paris in the late 1800s. I would say it was made in the 1880s, 1890s.
Every part of this engine was cast by hand and then assembled into the toy engine. I have seen different designs of Radiguet steam engines but I have never seen that amount of wheels and especially a very unusual solid brass eccentric rod that is not in a shape of a pipe but rather as an elongated rectangle.It reminds me a little bit of a Gothic element in architecture. In my opinion, this engine is not only rare, but it is a piece of art! The building where the store originally was is still there but the store does not exist anymore. I've carefully rotated the flywheel and I can see that is rotating 360 degrees and the rods are moving. One part of the water gauge is loose and it needs to be soldered back to the boiler.
I believe that when the glass tube broke, the previous owner took that part to replace the tube but never finished the project. Since it appears that the boiler is brass, I do not think it will be hard to solder this pat back. There are also some traces of other paint present and some scratches. I believe the boiler is made of brass and the base, columns, frame connecting parts on the top, the grid on the bottom, and possible wheels are made of cast iron.I can see the rough edges and surfaces left during the casting process. It was an expensive engine back in the days and it was made with reliable materials.
What is also exciting is to see the original tin triple burner that goes inside the fire door. This is the very first time I see the Radiguet burner of that design. The engine is quite a heavy piece weighing more than 10 Lbs! It is about 15 1/2" high to the top of the smokestack and the flywheel is about 5 1/2" in diameter. The boiler has a diameter of around 5. Please ask me first for the rate if you live in a differ ent country. This is a great opportunity for collectors and museums to obtain interesting, rare, and one of a kind examples.
